Kagiso Youth Plug Into Digital Future at Gauteng Youth Tech Expo

KAGISO – Excitement and curiosity filled Kagiso Hall this week as hundreds of young people from across the West Rand gathered for the two-day Youth Tech Expo, an initiative by the Gauteng Department of e-Government aimed at opening doors to digital skills and career opportunities.

Held on 5 and 6 February 2026, the expo focused on preparing young people for the fast-growing digital economy. From artificial intelligence (AI) to e-waste management and online entrepreneurship, the event showcased how technology can be used not only for innovation, but also for income generation and job creation. The programme placed strong emphasis on practical skills and real-world opportunities, helping young people understand how they can use digital platforms to build sustainable careers and remain competitive in an increasingly tech-driven world.

Gauteng Department of e-Government Chief of Staff Wiseman Simelane said the expo was designed to bridge the gap between young people and opportunities in the technology sector. “The Youth Tech Expo is about equipping young people with practical digital skills and connecting them to real opportunities. We want young people to see technology as a tool for economic inclusion, innovation and job creation,” said Simelane.

Beyond skills development, the expo also gave attendees direct access to internships, bursaries and business funding. A range of partner organisations were on hand to share information about programmes available in their respective sectors. For many participants, the event was an eye-opener. “I’ve always thought technology was only for people with advanced degrees, but this expo showed me that there are many entry points,” said attendee Thato Molefe. “I now understand how I can use digital platforms to start earning an income and even build a business.”

Siyabonga Ndlovu, another participant, said the opportunity to interact with potential employers and funders stood out the most. “What stands out for me is the access to internships, bursaries and funding information all in one place. Meeting organisations that are willing to support young people gives me hope that there is a future for us in the digital space,” he said.

Among the organisations that took part in the expo were GREYCODE, Creators Ark, Fundi, Harambee, NEMISA and FNB South Africa, all contributing to a shared goal of empowering young people through technology. As the digital world continues to shape the future of work, initiatives like the Youth Tech Expo are helping ensure that Gauteng’s young people are not left behind, but instead are equipped to lead in the new economy.
