From Adversity to Achievement: How Phenyo Mathopa Built Triviron Project Management into a Trusted Industry Leader
By Thembi Moyo
MIDRAND – What began as a painful experience of workplace discrimination has grown into one of South Africa’s respected project management companies. That was the inspiring story shared by Triviron Project Management (TPM) Chief Executive Officer Phenyo Mathopa as the company celebrated its 20th anniversary during a glamorous black-tie gala at Divine Sunset Venue in Midrand on Friday evening.
The celebration brought together clients, business leaders, industry partners, employees and family members to honour two decades of business success. But beyond the elegant setting and celebrations, the evening became a reflection on resilience, perseverance and the power of turning setbacks into opportunities.
Speaking to guests, Mathopa recalled an experience early in his career that became the turning point in his life. “I remember when I was still employed. Some of my peers earned higher salaries than I did, even though we held the same positions. I realised that the difference was not the quality of my work, but the colour of my skin,” he said.
Rather than allowing the experience to discourage him, Mathopa said it motivated him to create a company where excellence, fairness and accountability would define success. Twenty years later, that decision has resulted in Triviron Project Management becoming a trusted name in South Africa’s built environment, delivering complex infrastructure and project management solutions while building lasting relationships with clients.
Reflecting on the company’s journey, Mathopa said the anniversary represented far more than the number of years in business. “This celebration is about every person who believed in our vision, every client who trusted us with their projects and every employee who helped build this company. We are here because of relationships, hard work and a commitment to doing things the right way,” he said.
One of the most emotional moments of the evening came when Mathopa paid tribute to his mother, Angeline Mathopa, thanking her for standing by him throughout his entrepreneurial journey. Visibly moved, he acknowledged her unwavering encouragement during both the difficult early years and the company’s growth into an established business. “My mother believed in me long before many others did. Her support gave me the strength to keep going when things were difficult,” said Mathopa.
Throughout the evening, speakers repeatedly highlighted TPM’s reputation for integrity, professionalism and delivering on its promises.Clients and business partners shared stories of projects successfully completed and relationships that had continued long after contracts ended, describing the company as one that values people as much as performance.
One long-time client said the company’s success has been built on trust rather than simply winning tenders. “Working with Triviron has never been about transactions. They become partners in every project, and that’s why we’ve continued working together over the years,” the client said.
The celebration was hosted by renowned master of ceremonies Cedric “Tsonga Boy”, whose humour and energetic personality kept guests entertained throughout the evening while balancing moments of celebration with heartfelt reflection. Looking to the future, Mathopa said the company is preparing for its next phase of growth.
While TPM has established a strong presence in the public sector, he said the company is now focused on expanding its footprint within the private sector without compromising the values that have shaped its success. “Growth is important, but growth must never come at the expense of quality. We want to bring the same professionalism, accountability and long-term value to even more clients,” he said. As the evening came to a close, guests agreed that the celebration represented much more than a corporate anniversary.
It celebrated the determination of a businessman who transformed personal adversity into opportunity and built a company whose reputation has been earned through consistency, integrity and meaningful relationships. After two decades in business, Triviron Project Management enters its next chapter with ambitions to grow even further while remaining committed to the values that have defined its journey from the very beginning.
