Castle Double Malt Named Title Partner of Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry Ahead of Historic Springboks-All Blacks Series
JOHANNESBURG – Castle Double Malt has been announced as the official title partner of the iconic rivalry between the Springboks and New Zealand’s All Blacks, as anticipation builds for the visitors’ first full tour of South Africa in 30 years.
The partnership was officially launched at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg during an event attended by rugby legends, current Springbok players, representatives from SA Rugby and New Zealand Rugby, members of the media and invited guests.Hosted by former Springbok and sports broadcaster Gcobani Bobo, the launch began with a vibrant Zulu Impi warrior performance that celebrated South African heritage and set the stage for one of rugby’s most celebrated rivalries.
The event featured discussions on the history, present and future of the Springboks-All Blacks rivalry. Rugby legends Bakkies Botha and Bismarck du Plessis were joined by former All Blacks captain Sean Fitzpatrick to reflect on memorable encounters that have defined more than a century of competition between the two rugby powerhouses. Current Springboks Kwagga Smith and Lukhanyo Am also shared their excitement about writing the next chapter in the historic contest.
The Springboks and All Blacks first met in 1921 and have since played more than 100 Test matches. Together, the two nations have won seven Rugby World Cup titles, making their rivalry one of the most respected and fiercely contested in international sport.SA Rugby Chief Executive Officer Rian Oberholzer welcomed the new partnership, saying it recognises the values that have made the rivalry special for generations.”Few rivalries in world sport have challenged generations of players to raise their standards quite like the Springboks and All Blacks. Castle Double Malt understands what makes this contest so special—not only the intensity on the field, but also the values that have defined it for more than a century. We’re delighted to welcome the brand as title partner and look forward to creating unforgettable experiences for supporters throughout the series,” he said.
Vaughan Croeser, Vice President of Marketing at South African Breweries, described the sponsorship as an important milestone for the brand.”Becoming the title partner of Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry is a defining moment for Castle Double Malt. The Springboks and All Blacks have inspired generations through their skill, resilience and pursuit of excellence. We are proud to celebrate that legacy while creating new experiences that bring supporters closer to the action than ever before,” he said.
As part of the partnership, Castle Double Malt plans to roll out one of its biggest rugby fan engagement campaigns, including nationwide public watch parties and a range of supporter experiences that will be announced in the coming months.Reflecting on the rivalry, Gcobani Bobo said what makes the contest unique goes beyond what happens during the 80 minutes on the field.”People see the intensity of the match, but they don’t always see the friendships and mutual respect that develop between players afterwards. That’s what makes this rivalry so special. It’s about the stories and relationships that last long after the final whistle,” he said.
Former All Blacks captain Sean Fitzpatrick echoed those sentiments, describing matches against South Africa as the greatest challenge of his career.”There was never a tougher challenge than playing against the Springboks. Every Test pushed you to your limits, but that’s what made the rivalry so memorable. It brought out the best in both teams, and the respect between players lasts a lifetime. It’s wonderful to see that legacy celebrated through this partnership,” he said. With the All Blacks preparing for their first full South African tour in three decades, rugby supporters can look forward to another memorable chapter in one of the sport’s greatest rivalries, both on and off the field.
