GLB Warns Against Dangerous “Pens Down” Parties

As Gauteng’s Class of 2024 wraps up their final exams, the Gauteng Liquor Board (GLB) has issued a strong warning against “pens down” parties, which are often marked by excessive alcohol consumption and risky behavior.

These celebrations have historically posed serious dangers to the youth, highlighted by incidents like the tragic deaths of 21 minors at Enyobeni Tavern in 2022. Last year, similar parties led to fatal car crashes and hospitalizations, including the loss of three Mnyanande Secondary School pupils in Durban and five Dinwiddie High learners in Germiston.

Fati Manamela, Chief Director of the GLB, stressed the urgency of tackling this issue. “Despite repeated awareness campaigns, underage drinking during end-of-exam celebrations remains a grave concern. We must act decisively to protect our young people.”

The Gauteng Liquor Act of 2003 prohibits the sale of alcohol to minors, yet violations persist. The GLB is urging parents, guardians, and liquor traders to take responsibility. Parents are encouraged to stay vigilant, while traders must refuse to sell alcohol to underage individuals and report suspicious activities.

“Celebrating achievements is important but must be done legally and responsibly,” Manamela added. “Our youth are future leaders, and their safety is paramount.”

The GLB calls on communities, schools, and law enforcement to collaborate in preventing further tragedies during this festive season.
