Urban Rooftop Farming in Hillbrow, Transforming Spaces and Lives

Meet Mike Mkhwanazi, the passionate visionary behind Outreach Foundation’s rooftop garden since 2020. With a deep love for gardening and sustainability, he has transformed an urban rooftop into a thriving green oasis, setting an example for eco-friendly urban living.

Under Mike’s dedicated care, the rooftop garden has flourished, producing a variety of fresh vegetables that nourish participants and generate income through sales. Surplus produce is donated to local NGOs, NPOs, and migrant communities, fostering social responsibility and support for vulnerable groups.

“This garden has changed my life,” Mike shares with heartfelt emotion. “It has given me a sense of purpose and strengthened my connection with the community. I’ve witnessed its impact firsthand—teaching valuable skills, promoting healthy eating, and providing a peaceful escape from the city’s hustle. It empowers people to grow their own food at home, even in limited spaces.”

Beyond providing fresh produce, the rooftop garden serves as an outdoor classroom where young individuals from diverse backgrounds learn urban farming techniques, green practices, and sustainable living skills. Mike and his team utilize innovative methods to cultivate vegetables in small, unconventional spaces using upcycled materials such as old tyres, plastic containers, and tin cans.

Mike’s dedication has inspired two interns, Annie and Tshepisho, to join him in this journey. For Tshepisho, urban farming has been a transformative experience. “I used to think gardening was just about planting and watering,” she says. “But it’s so much more. It’s about nurturing life, being patient, and trusting the process. It has taught me valuable lessons in perseverance and responsibility.”

Annie, on the other hand, has applied her newfound knowledge at home. She has creatively repurposed discarded materials to establish a flourishing backyard garden, growing a variety of vegetables. “I was amazed at how easily I could reuse old items,” she says proudly. “I’ve planted spinach and herbs in tyres and used plastic containers for tomatoes and peppers. It’s incredible to turn waste into a productive garden.”

The Importance of Urban Farming and Green Skills

As the global population continues to rise, sustainable food production is more crucial than ever. Urban farming provides a viable solution, allowing communities to grow fresh produce in small spaces, reducing reliance on industrial agriculture and long-distance food transportation. Green skills help individuals embrace eco-friendly practices that promote self-sufficiency and environmental conservation.

The Outreach Foundation’s rooftop garden is integral to its mission of fostering sustainability, education, and community development. As the initiative grows, it continues to uplift vulnerable communities by providing skills training, employment opportunities, and access to nutritious food.

With every seed planted, the garden cultivates more than just vegetables—it nurtures hope, opportunity, and a sustainable future for all.
