Drug Traffickers Arrested at OR Tambo Airport – R1.2 Million Worth of Cocaine and Heroin Seized
Johannesburg, 21 March 2025 – The South African Police Service (SAPS) has intensified its crackdown on drug trafficking with the arrest of two suspected drug mules at OR Tambo International Airport. This latest bust brings the total number of similar arrests at the airport to five since January 2025, underscoring the ongoing fight against international drug smuggling.
Suspects Caught Smuggling Cocaine from Brazil
A 24-year-old Brazilian man and a 51-year-old South African woman were intercepted by authorities upon their arrival from São Paulo, Brazil, on Thursday, 20 March 2025. The duo was taken into custody after police discovered that they had ingested drug-filled “bullets,” suspected to contain cocaine.
A medical examination confirmed the presence of illicit substances in their systems, and the process of expelling the drugs is currently underway. The exact quantity and final valuation will be determined upon completion of forensic analysis. However, initial estimates place the street value of the cocaine at over R1 million.
Additional Drug Haul Discovered
Upon further inspection, police uncovered more cocaine hidden inside the suspects’ luggage, further strengthening suspicions of a well-coordinated smuggling operation. Investigators are now working to determine whether the two individuals are part of a larger drug syndicate operating between South America and South Africa.
Separate Heroin Bust at OR Tambo
In a separate incident earlier today, 21 March 2025, authorities intercepted a shipment of white powder, suspected to be heroin, worth over R200,000. Preliminary investigations suggest that the consignment was en route to London, United Kingdom. Law enforcement officials are now probing the origins and intended recipients of the illicit cargo.
Ongoing Crackdown on Drug Trafficking
OR Tambo International Airport has become a key battleground in South Africa’s efforts to combat drug smuggling. SAPS has increased surveillance and intelligence-led operations to disrupt international trafficking networks and prevent illegal substances from entering or exiting the country.
“These arrests and seizures are a testament to our relentless efforts to combat drug smuggling and organized crime,” said a SAPS spokesperson. “We remain committed to dismantling these criminal networks and ensuring that our airports are not used as gateways for illegal drug trade.”
The suspects are expected to appear in court soon, facing serious drug trafficking charges. Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to tackling transnational crime and strengthening border security at OR Tambo International Airport.
