Wits promotes youths to senior team

Sports Reporter

Following club chairman Alan Fainman’s call, Bidvest Wits is promoting more young players to the senior team.

Earlier Fainman said he wanted the club have a model similar to that of Ajax Amsterdam, where most of the first team players were developed in-house.

Recently the club promoted youngsters Rowan Human and Solly Khunyedi, both 19 years old, to the first team.

Coach Gavin Hunt said he gives more reserve team players a chance. “At 16 and 17 years old, they are old enough to play, so they must play. As much as adversity affects us, there is opportunity for other players; you put them on a big stage and give them a shot.”

Hunt also accused some coaches of poaching his players, and said God shall deal with them. He said some of his counterparts are breaching protocol in their attempt to lure his players to their clubs by directly calling the players instead of approaching the club.

He however said he would not report them to the Premier Soccer League (PSL); and will leave everything in God’s hands.

“Every single day one of my players gets a phone call from a coach, it is unbelievable. So I just do my thing and just keep going. The players are honest with me, they tell me and I tell them to keep going. I can’t fight and it is no good reporting people to the PSL, there is the man upstairs who will punish them,” Hunt said.
