Joburg CBD muggings alert
Johannesburg – Police have warned about increasing street robberies in the CBD at this time of the year.
Police advise that those walking alone in the CBD and Braamfontein must be extra careful. Police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo said many people get mugged in the CBD, and also students in Braamfontein and Auckland Park.
“Many cases of street robberies are reported, especially at this time of the year, when students get to the CBD and become easy targets for robbers,” said Masondo.
He said most cases were in areas where there are higher learning institutions like Braamfontein, where Wits University is located, and Auckland Park, where University of Johannesburg students are targeted.
“The students must walk in groups and not entertain strangers approach them asking for directions,” he said.
Masondo added that another target area are taxi ranks, where criminals target people from out of town.
