Unity Through Soccer: EKhaya Park Tournament Uplifts Hillbrow Youth
By Sithembile Moyo
The spirit of community, passion for football, and hope for a brighter future came alive at the EKhaya Park Soccer Tournament, proudly sponsored by the Property Owners Hillbrow District. This vibrant tournament brought together 22 youth teams from across Hillbrow, proving that when young people are given the right opportunities, they rise above challenges.
The main goal of the tournament was clear: to unite the youth, encourage healthy lifestyles, and keep them away from the dangers of crime, drugs, and alcohol. For many of these young players, soccer is more than just a game—it’s a lifeline.
“Soccer brings them together. It builds positive relationships and gives them something to look forward to,” said Ryan Nxumalo, one of the event organizers. “Many people see Hillbrow in a negative light, but through events like this, we show the talent, energy, and unity that lives here.”
Throughout the day, the atmosphere was electric. Children and teens showcased their talent on the field, cheered on by families, friends, and coaches. The event also served as a platform for senior coaches and scouts to identify promising young players who could be guided toward professional soccer careers.
Beyond the matches, the tournament created a safe space filled with joy and laughter. Free food was distributed to ensure every child was nourished, and the sense of togetherness was clear as participants mingled, bonded, and created memories.
