Metrobus soon will be cashless

Metrobus will transition to a cashless payment system on 1 October 2024 as part of its ongoing digital transformation efforts. This shift aims to improve efficiency and enhance commuter experiences by eliminating cash transactions for all services, Metrobus announced.

“We are excited about the move to a cashless mobility system, which will create a safer and more secure travel experience for everyone,” said Tshepho Nathan, Metrobus Executive Manager of Corporate Strategy and Business Support. Nathan emphasized that removing cash payments will not only increase safety but also streamline operations by reducing the risks associated with theft, loss, and hygiene issues from handling cash.

In preparation for the switch, commuters will need to purchase Metrobus smart tags, which will be available starting 27 September for R35. Nathan added, “We have lowered the cost of the smart tags to make them more accessible. Additionally, the first 10,000 current passengers will receive a new registered card for free, and they will need an active mobile number for OTP registration.”

Although the new system officially launches in October, old cardholders will be able to use their cards until 30 November. Metrobus is also expanding its sales outlets to ten locations to ease the transition.

“Commuters should ensure they have access to digital payment methods, and Metrobus will offer support to help users adapt to the new system in the coming weeks,” Nathan advised.

The modernization marks a significant step forward in Metrobus’s efforts to provide a more convenient and efficient transit experience for all passengers.
