Joburg gives mothers a day to remember

It was a jovial and sunny Sunday morning when Joburg City Parks and Zoo hosted a fun-filled Mother’s Day musical concert on 13 May 2018 at the Johannesburg Zoo.

No better way personified the commemoration of motherhood and the festivity of maternal bonds than the happy sounds that filled the air around Parkview.

The epic spectacle featured artists like DJ Bhibo, the Sacred Heart Jazz Band and Drum Café Marimba Band. Key performers included R&B/soul artist Langa Mavuso, who was signed to DJ Black Coffee’s record label, Soulistic Music and award-winning South African acappella group The Soil.

The concert played songs from all-time greats like “Mme-Motswadi” by Judith Sephuma, “Too Late For Mama” by the late Brenda Fassie and “Point of view” by Jimmy Dludlu.

Keynote speaker and MMC for Community Development Cllr Nonhlanhla Sifumba spoke fondly about the value of having mother figures in communities.

“Throughout the year, mothers, whether biological or circumstantial, selflessly give of themselves to make sure that society not only thrives, but that it succeeds. We acknowledge all of you today and the invaluable role you play in our societies,” said MMC Sifumba.

Mother of two, Nelly Nkambule said: “I never anticipated such a great occasion when my kids told me they wanted to spoil me with something nice today…what an honour.”

With that said, one should bear in mind: Whatever you give a woman, she makes great. Give her a house; she will give you a home. Give her groceries; she will give you a meal. Give her a smile; she will give you her heart.
