CGSO Takes Compliance Drive to Industry at GS1 Indaba

By Thembi Moyo

The Consumer Goods and Services Ombud (CGSO) is taking its compliance message directly to the retail sector, engaging businesses on the ground at the GS1 South Africa Indaba 2026. With retailers, suppliers and industry leaders gathered at the event, CGSO’s Business Development team is using the platform to emphasise the importance of adhering to the Consumer Goods and Services Code of Conduct positioning it as a key tool for building a fair and transparent trading environment.

Moving across exhibition stands and engaging in discussions, the team is addressing common industry challenges, including delayed payments, contract disputes and supplier-retailer tensions. “We often encounter disputes that could have been avoided if there was a clearer understanding of the Code,” a CGSO representative said. “Being here allows us to engage directly with businesses and provide practical guidance.”

Hosted by GS1 South Africa, the Indaba has brought together key players in the supply chain ecosystem, creating space for conversations around accountability, ethical trading and stronger commercial relationships. The presence of international delegates, including representatives from GS1 Jordan and GS1 Costa Rica, has further reinforced the role of global standards in shaping local industry practices.

CGSO says its participation reflects a shift towards proactive engagement focusing on education and awareness to prevent disputes before they arise, rather than responding after the fact. The Ombud also highlighted that improved compliance not only protects consumers but strengthens trust across the value chain, ultimately contributing to a more stable and competitive market.

As engagements continue throughout the Indaba, CGSO is urging businesses to view compliance not as a regulatory burden, but as a foundation for sustainable growth and ethical business conduct.
