Bafana Bafana set sights on AFCON spot
Bafana Bafana got off to a great start on their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign. In their first qualifier match, the South African squad clawed their way back from two goals down to force a last-gasp 2-2 draw with Uganda during an at times nerve-raking 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier at Orlando Stadium on Friday, 6 September.
On Tuesday, 10 September, Bafana got their first taste of victory beating South Sudan 3-2 in added time to win at the Juba National Stadium.
Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos was happy after winning the three points in such dramatic fashion but added that he was not satisfied with the performance. He felt that his team could have wrapped up the game in the first half.
“I thank the good Lord upstairs, He was with us in this game, and also against Uganda. But we played better against Uganda, today we didn’t really play our best game. We should have done better. If we had done better, I think the score should not be 3-2, but maybe 5-2 or something for South Africa,” he said.
The AFCON qualifiers are currently taking place with all countries battling it out for a spot at the finals in Morocco. The qualifiers will determine the 24 teams that will contest the 35th edition of Africa’s biggest sporting spectacle set to take place in the North African nation between 21 December and 18 January.
