City of Joburg retain OR Tambo Soncini Trophy
Team Joburg came out on top at the 7th Annual OR Tambo Soncini Games held at the University of Johannesburg on the weekend of 26-27 October 2024.
Retaining their number one position since last year’s games, Team Joburg was followed by Ekurhuleni and Tshwane in second and third place respectively.
The games are part of the celebration of October as O.R. Tambo Month, to in memory of his legacy here in South Africa and globally. Tambo had a special relationship with the late Guiseppe Soncini of the City of Reggio Emilia in Italy. Soncini, who passed away in April 1991, will be remembered for his support and enabling the signing of an international solidarity pact with various political organizations in 1977.
Organized by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture, and Recreation, the games brought young and talented Gauteng citizens from across all regions of the province to compete in multiple sports codes like football, netball, and swimming amongst others. These local sports stars then compete with their counterparts from the City of Reggio Emelia in Italy.
