UFS Positions Itself as a Gateway for Deeper South Africa–China Academic Cooperation

The University of the Free State (UFS) has reinforced its growing role in global knowledge diplomacy following a courtesy visit by China’s Consul General in Johannesburg, Mr Pan Qingjiang, marking another step toward deepening academic, research and cultural ties between South Africa and China.

During the engagement with UFS Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Hester C. Klopper, discussions moved beyond protocol to focus on how universities can act as bridges between nations developing skills, fostering innovation and strengthening people-to-people relations in an increasingly interconnected world. Welcoming the Chinese delegation, Prof Klopper highlighted the strategic importance of international partnerships in addressing shared global challenges such as sustainable development, public health, food security and technological innovation.

“Universities are no longer just centres of learning; they are active contributors to global problem-solving,” Prof Klopper said. “Our engagement with China is grounded in mutual respect, shared values of knowledge exchange, and a commitment to creating opportunities that benefit students, researchers and communities in both countries.”

The visit reaffirmed UFS’s intention to expand academic and student exchange programmes, strengthen joint research initiatives, and explore new areas of collaboration with Chinese higher education institutions. Particular emphasis was placed on postgraduate training, innovation-driven research and cultural exchange as tools for long-term cooperation. Mr Pan Qingjiang praised UFS for its growing international outlook and its willingness to engage meaningfully with Chinese partners. He noted that education remains a cornerstone of China–South Africa relations and a key driver of sustainable bilateral cooperation.

“Educational cooperation builds understanding at a human level,” Mr Pan said. “By strengthening exchanges between Chinese and South African universities, we are investing in future leaders who will carry forward friendship, cooperation and mutual development.” He also encouraged UFS to take advantage of existing platforms that support collaboration between Chinese and African universities, including scholarship programmes, research funding mechanisms and institutional partnerships.

Also present at the meeting were Prof Ylva Rodny-Gumede, Executive Director: Advancement, and Prof Lynette Jacobs, Acting Director of the Office for International Affairs. Both emphasised the importance of aligning international partnerships with UFS’s strategic priorities, ensuring that collaboration delivers tangible academic and societal impact.

Prof Rodny-Gumede noted that international engagement plays a vital role in enhancing the university’s global visibility and competitiveness. “Strategic partnerships such as these open doors for our students and academics to participate in global networks of knowledge and innovation,” she said.

The courtesy visit comes at a time when South African universities are increasingly positioning themselves as global players while remaining anchored in local relevance. For UFS, the engagement with China’s Consul General signals a clear intention to grow its international footprint while contributing to broader South Africa–China relations through education and research. As global challenges continue to demand collaborative solutions, the meeting underscored the shared belief that universities can serve as powerful platforms for dialogue, cooperation and sustainable development across borders.
