Vodacom Named Africa’s Top Employer for Third Consecutive Year

Johannesburg -Vodacom Group has been named Africa’s top employer for the third year in a row, cementing its position as a continental leader in workplace culture, innovation and ethical use of technology.

The recognition comes from the Top Employers Institute, a global authority that benchmarks human resources practices against international standards. In addition to the group-wide accolade, Vodacom operations in South Africa, Mozambique, Tanzania, and Safaricom in Kenya and Ethiopia were also individually certified.

Vodacom Group Chief Executive Officer Shameel Joosub said the achievement marked a significant milestone in the company’s Vision 2030 journey.
“Being certified as Africa’s Top Employer for a third consecutive year reflects our consistency in leading with purpose. It affirms that our people-centric approach, strong workplace culture and investment in talent development are making a real impact,” he said.

The Top Employer certification evaluates organisations across 20 key HR areas, including people strategy, talent acquisition, leadership development, learning and development, performance management, employee wellbeing, and diversity and inclusion.

Chief Human Resources Officer at Vodacom Group, Matimba Mbungela, said the recognition highlights the company’s sustained commitment to its employees.
“Creating an exceptional employee experience is not a once-off effort but a continuous commitment. When our people feel supported and empowered, it strengthens our ability to connect for a better future,” he said.

Vodacom Group achieved an overall score of 99.56%, placing it among the highest-rated employers globally. Vodacom Mozambique recorded the group’s highest score at 99.96%, followed by Vodacom South Africa at 99.88% and Vodacom Tanzania at 99.76%. Safaricom Kenya and Safaricom Ethiopia were each ranked first in their respective countries.

A notable aspect of this year’s assessment was the expanded focus on innovation, ethical leadership and the human impact of artificial intelligence. The Top Employers Institute introduced new criteria examining how organisations support creativity, integrate AI responsibly, and embed ethical principles into people and technology practices.

Vodacom South Africa was recognised for two global best practices: its approach to evaluating the impact of human-AI collaboration on employees, and its initiatives to encourage innovation through programmes such as hackathons that allow staff to experiment and share ideas in a supportive environment.

Mbungela said these priorities reflect the future of work. “We are proud to be recognised for championing innovation while ensuring technology adoption remains ethical and people-focused.”

Vodacom’s employer success is supported by continued investment in digital HR systems, future-fit skills development, leadership capability and employee wellbeing. Its Employee Value Proposition is built on compassion, acceptance, respect and empathy, and includes comprehensive wellness programmes and family responsibility leave policies.

Beyond its own workforce, Vodacom continues to invest in the broader African technology ecosystem through initiatives such as the Vodacom Digital Skills Hub, CodeLikeAGirl and graduate development programmes aimed at preparing young people for careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Looking ahead, Vodacom says it remains focused on building a workplace that inspires growth, innovation and purpose.
“Our third consecutive recognition as Africa’s Top Employer affirms our belief that putting people first is the key to sustainable success,” Mbungela said.
