Transformer Explosion in New Doornfontein Leaves Three Injured
2 February 2026 Johannesburg- Emergency Management Services responded to reports of a transformer explosion at the intersection of Lower Railway Road and Staib Street in New Doornfontein.
Firefighting operations were initiated immediately upon arrival, and the fire has since been successfully extinguished. The transformer was located inside a small utility storage room. The explosion reportedly led to the collapse of the room and an adjoining boundary wall. The affected building is believed to be used as student accommodation.
As a precautionary measure, all residents in the immediate vicinity were evacuated to a nearby building. At this stage, all occupants have been accounted for. Three individuals sustained injuries during the incident and were transported to nearby hospitals by Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) ambulance services for medical treatment. Responsibility for matters relating to the transformer explosion has been handed over to City Power for further management, investigation, and necessary remedial action.
Emergency services remain on scene to conduct ongoing safety assessments and ensure the area is secure.
