TETA and UCT Launch International Leadership Programme to Shape the Future of Transport

By Sithembile Moyo

The Transport Education Training Authority (TETA) has officially launched the International Leadership Development Programme (ILDP) in partnership with the University of Cape Town (UCT), marking a significant step toward future-proofing leadership within South Africa’s transport sector.

This bold initiative is designed to empower senior professionals with advanced leadership skills, global perspectives, and strategic insights to navigate the complex and rapidly evolving transport landscape. Through this collaboration with one of Africa’s top academic institutions, TETA aims to develop visionary leaders capable of driving transformation, innovation, and sustainable growth across all corners of the transport industry.

“Strategic leadership is at the heart of any thriving sector, and the transport industry is no exception,” said TETA CEO Ms. Maphefo Anno-Frempong at the programme’s launch.
“To remain competitive and resilient, we must develop leaders who can think globally, act decisively, and inspire innovation.”

The ILDP not only reflects TETA’s ongoing commitment to skills development but also responds directly to the urgent need for adaptable, forward-thinking leadership. With the transport sector facing challenges such as digitisation, climate change, infrastructure renewal, and shifting global trade dynamics, leadership must evolve in step with the times.

Speaking on the broader context of change, Rayner Canning added:

“The pace of change is one of the biggest challenges facing industries around the world,” he said.
“The transport sector is incredibly diverse, with numerous sub-sectors, and it’s essential that programmes like the ILDP don’t just focus on the biggest areas. We need to invest in individuals and teams across all parts of the sector to build a resilient and future-ready industry.”

By engaging with high-level academic partners like UCT, TETA ensures that the programme is backed by rigorous academic standards and global best practices. This collaboration highlights the value of partnerships between industry and higher education in creating impactful, long-term solutions.

TETA encourages stakeholders and the public to support the work being done by Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs) across South Africa. These efforts, rooted in education and empowerment, are transforming lives and laying the groundwork for a more dynamic and inclusive economy.

As TETA continues to shape the leaders of tomorrow, the organisation reaffirms its mission: to equip South Africa’s transport sector with the skills and leadership it needs to compete—and thrive—on the global stage.
