Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation Leads the Way in Digital Skills and Youth Empowerment

The Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation (KMF) is making a significant impact in bridging South Africa’s digital divide through its innovative programmes for youth and underserved communities. At the heart of this mission is the KMF Digital Skills Centre, where learners from public schools engage in cutting-edge training every Saturday.
The curriculum includes robotics, multimedia podcasting, game development, and drone flying, delivered in a hybrid learning environment that combines classroom theory with hands-on skills development.
Beyond tech, KMF also supports agriculture education and school nutrition programmes through greenhouse installations and food donations. Partnerships with organisations like The Manger Care Centre offer accredited training in Agricultural Skills and Food Security.
KMF is also preparing to launch a renewable energy training programme aimed at NEET youth (not in employment, education or training), in partnership with the University of Johannesburg. This forward-thinking initiative will train youth in solar and wind energy systems, positioning them for employment or entrepreneurship in the green economy.
Recognised in the UN Secretary-General’s 2023 report on Industrial Development in Africa, KMF continues to expand its vision. Plans are underway to build a permanent Digital Skills Centre and the Foundation is seeking partnerships and support to make this a reality.
