HILLBROW – The spirit of Nelson Mandela lived on in Hillbrow as young footballers and netball players came together for a vibrant Mandela Day Sports Tournament that celebrated teamwork, unity and community pride.

Hosted by the Hillbrow eKhaya Community Improvement District (HECID) on 18 July, the tournament transformed local sports grounds into spaces of excitement, friendly competition and social cohesion, with dozens of young people taking part in football and netball matches.

Away from the football field, girls also took centre stage in an exciting netball tournament held at Elkero Park, known locally as the women’s park, situated at the corner of Claim and Pietersen streets. The matches highlighted the growing participation of young women in sport and reinforced the importance of creating safe recreational spaces for girls in the inner city.

The Mandela Day tournament formed part of Hillbrow eKhaya’s ongoing efforts to use sport as a tool for bringing residents together, promoting healthy lifestyles and creating stronger neighbourhood connections. Bafikile said the event was about more than winning trophies. It was an opportunity to build relationships, encourage positive youth development and strengthen social cohesion within the community. “The story of Hillbrow eKhaya continues,” Bafikile said. “We are building our neighbourhood through sport, creating opportunities for young people to connect, learn and grow together.”

Parents, residents and supporters cheered from the sidelines throughout the day, creating a festive atmosphere that reflected the community’s commitment to making Hillbrow a safer and more vibrant place to live. The successful tournament ended with medal presentations and celebrations for the winning teams, but organisers said the real victory was seeing young people from different parts of the community playing together in the true spirit of Mandela Day.

As the final whistle blew, one message stood out, Hillbrow is a community where sport continues to bring people together, proving that a vibrant neighbourhood is built through unity, participation and hope.
