JMPD and Multi-Agency Team Arrested Suspects and Recovered Firearms and Vehicles Linked to the Murder of JMPD Officer Mbambo

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) is pleased to report significant operational success in the investigation into the brutal murder of our dedicated 46-year-old officer, Nkululeko Mbambo, which occurred on Monday, 14 April 2025, in Leondale, Ekurhuleni.

Following intensive investigative work and the diligent pursuit of crucial leads, a highly effective joint operation was conducted on Wednesday, 16 April 2025, in Leondale and continued into Thursday, 17 April 2025, in Lawley south of Johannesburg.

This operation was led by the JMPD Tactical Response/K9 Unit and SAPS Anti-Kidnapping Task Team together with the Gauteng PES Flexi, DPCI Germiston, Gauteng Crime Intelligence, Sedibeng TRT and Crime Intelligence, EMPD CLU, Gauteng Traffic Police SLEU and Private Security.

Acting on information the joint team proceeded to two locations in Leondale on Wednesday, 16 April 2025. At the first location, two (2) suspects were apprehended. A significant cache of firearms was recovered, including an AK47 rifle, an R5 rifle, and two pistols. Notably, a Vector pistol was found concealed in a refrigerator. A Toyota Rumion, positively identified as being used in the commission of Officer Mbambo’s murder, was also recovered on the premises.

The team then moved to a second location where the suspect believed to be the shooter, identified from CCTV footage, was arrested while in possession of a pistol believed to be the murder weapon. A hijacked Toyota Urban Cruiser reported stolen under the Bramley SAPS case, was also discovered in the yard.

Upon questioning, this suspect revealed that Officer Mbambo’s service firearm, taken during the fatal shooting, was with his younger brother at the Lawley Station Informal Settlement.

Continuing their operation into Thursday, 17 April 2025, the team proceeded to the Lawley Station Informal Settlement. There, one (1) additional suspect was apprehended, and Officer Mbambo’s service firearm was recovered, although its serial number had been filed off. A Volkswagen Polo Vivo, found on the property, was confirmed to be hijacked under the Westonaria SAPS case.

The JMPD Chief of Police Commissioner Patrick Jaca stated, “The meticulous planning and seamless execution of this multi-agency operation underscores our unwavering commitment to bringing justice for Officer Mbambo. The recovery of the firearms and vehicles, along with the apprehension of these suspects, is a testament to the dedication, bravery, and collaborative spirit of all the units involved. We extend our deepest gratitude to each and every member who participated in this significant success.”

In this difficult time, our thoughts and deepest condolences remain with the family, friends, and colleagues of our fallen officer. We recognize the immense sacrifice he made in service to our city, and we share in their profound grief. The JMPD will continue to provide unwavering support to his family during this period of mourning.

The four (4) arrested suspects are currently in custody and will be appearing in court soon. The JMPD is working closely with the South African Police Service (SAPS) on this ongoing investigation.
