The Origins and Mission of Itrotra-MAP
The festival traces its roots to the Itrotra International Dance Festival of Madagascar (Itrotra Festival International de Danse Contemporaine à Madagascar). Over the years, Itrotra has become a cornerstone of contemporary dance in the Malagasy arts scene, providing a platform for diverse talents and artistic collaborations.
Notably, Itrotra has maintained strong ties with South African dance companies and artists for over 13 years, including collaborations with the South African Embassy in Madagascar (2015-2017). The name “Itrotra” translates to “Encounters,” symbolizing the festival’s role in fostering cultural exchanges. The acronym MAP stands for Mobile Art Platform, highlighting the festival’s global outreach and commitment to cross-cultural artistic innovation.
A Platform for Creativity and Artistic Development
Co-curated by Moeketsi Koena (South Africa) and Gaby Saranouffi (Madagascar)—both renowned dancers, choreographers, and arts managers—the Itrotra-MAP Dance Festival serves as a hub for:
- Artistic interactive engagement
- Development of contemporary dance and performing arts
- Residencies and mentorship programs
- Workshops, panel discussions, and networking opportunities
By mapping the festival globally, Itrotra-MAP continues to create spaces for artists to explore, collaborate, and push the boundaries of contemporary dance. Whether through formal performances or informal creative sessions, this festival is dedicated to nurturing new talent, strengthening artistic connections, and celebrating the universal language of dance.
