From Boston Student to Education Leader Meet Merriam Koqo-Hlengane
For more than 25 years, Merriam Koqo-Hlengane has dedicated her career to education and helping students work towards meaningful futures.
Today, she serves as the Manager of the Boston City Campus Soweto Support Centre, where she plays an important role in guiding and supporting students as they pursue their academic and career goals.
Merriam’s relationship with Boston is especially meaningful because she was once a Boston student herself. She studied at Boston City Campus Braamfontein, gaining knowledge and skills that contributed to her professional development and prepared her for leadership in the higher education environment.
Her journey from student to Support Centre Manager demonstrates the transformative power of education, perseverance and continuous learning. It is also a reminder that success is seldom achieved overnight. It is built through commitment, discipline and the courage to continue moving forward, even when the journey presents challenges.
Beyond her professional responsibilities, Merriam is a wife and mother to two teenagers. Her experiences as both a parent and an education leader have strengthened her understanding of the importance of investing in young people and encouraging them to recognise their potential.
She is particularly passionate about empowering young women to believe in themselves, take their education seriously and dream beyond their present circumstances. Merriam believes that being a girl should never be viewed as a limitation, but as an opportunity to become a leader, professional, entrepreneur, mother and positive influence within society.
Her message to the girl child is simple but powerful:
“Believe in yourself, value your education and never allow your present circumstances to define your future. Your story is still being written, and you have the power to make it a story of purpose, achievement and success.”
