Court jails CBD gunman

Johannesburg – Last Thursday the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court sentenced a man to nine years in prison for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The man, Bridan Uwagboe, 40, was sentenced to seven years for the unlicensed firearm and two years for possession of ammunition.

Johannesburg Central police spokesperson Captain Xoli Mbele said the man was arrested on 24 October last year at the Wanderers taxi rank. “While walking in the taxi rank next to the taxis to Durban, the police officers saw a suspicious male carrying a black bag. They searched his bag and recovered a firearm with six live rounds. The firearm has a serial number which shows that it was reported stolen in Tembisa during a house robbery in October 2010.”

Mbele commended the work of investigating officer Constable Dolamo of Johannesburg Central Detectives. “We hope this sentence will scare other would-be offenders from committing the same crime,” he said.
