Chinese Hospital Ship “Peace Ark” Completes Humanitarian Mission
The Chinese Navy hospital ship, Peace Ark, has returned to port in Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province, after completing its “Mission Harmony-2024” deployment. This humanitarian mission took the ship to 13 countries across Asia and Africa, including South Africa, providing vital medical assistance to thousands.
The Peace Ark departed on June 16, 2024, and completed a record-breaking journey of 215 days, covering more than 30,000 nautical miles. This was the longest and most extensive deployment since the mission series began in 2010.
During its visit to South Africa, part of broader efforts to strengthen ties between China and South Africa, the Peace Ark docked in Cape Town. The ship is equipped with state-of-the-art medical facilities, including eight operating rooms, 300 beds, diagnostic equipment, blood banks, and a rescue helicopter.
The medical team on board provided free services to thousands, treating 82,980 cases of common and prevalent diseases and performing 1,392 surgeries during the mission. The ship’s crew also engaged in cultural exchanges and professional seminars with local healthcare workers, fostering international collaboration.
Since its inaugural mission in 2010, the Peace Ark has visited 49 countries, offering medical services to over 370,000 people. Its contributions highlight China’s commitment to humanitarian assistance and its growing partnership with Africa.
The mission also aligned with China’s ongoing efforts to deepen ties with South Africa. In August 2024, China’s Minister Liu Jinchao visited the country, emphasizing the importance of the China-South Africa relationship.
The Peace Ark stands as a symbol of international cooperation and goodwill, showcasing how partnerships can deliver meaningful benefits to communities in need. For South Africans who were part of this historic mission, the ship’s presence reinforced the spirit of global solidarity.
