Embracing the Power of Now: A Call to Action for Learners

By Sithembile Moyo

At the Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation (KMF), we believe that life occasionally grants us moments of real grace—opportunities to reflect, reset, and reimagine our journey forward. These moments allow us to release what we have unknowingly been holding onto. As we begin this new year, let us embrace the chance to grow, let go, and step forward with renewed purpose.

A Commitment to Ourselves and Our Future

Today, we reaffirm our responsibility—to our bodies, our minds, our families, our country, and our beloved Africa. Our well-being is the foundation upon which our lives are built, influencing our success, resilience, and ability to contribute meaningfully to society.

Self-care is not a luxury but a necessity. Treating ourselves with kindness, compassion, and love allows us to see new possibilities, gain fresh perspectives, and cultivate strength and clarity.

Celebrating Excellence and Perseverance

It is an honor to stand here today to celebrate the achievements of our learners. Their success is not only defined by academic excellence but also by their determination, perseverance, and commitment to growth. Through digital skills training, virtual learning experiences, and accredited courses in agriculture and food security, they have demonstrated an unquenchable thirst for knowledge.

Education extends beyond acquiring information—it fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability. True intelligence often operates in silence, revealing solutions, creativity, and progress in moments of reflection.

The Power of Now

The distinction between past, present, and future is a construct of the mind. The past shapes us, and the future unfolds as a series of present moments. The only reality is now—the choices we make and the actions we take today.

For our learners, now is about prioritizing studies, caring for their well-being, assisting fellow students, applying for bursaries, developing business plans, and honing their skills. Success is built on recognizing what is primary and acting upon it with commitment and intent.

A Hunger for Education

South African youth display an inspiring hunger for education. The learners we celebrate today have pursued knowledge relentlessly, sometimes needing reminders to rest. Their drive reflects a deep commitment to honoring life in the present and refusing to postpone their aspirations.

To our awardees—your hard work and dedication have led you to this moment. You have embraced challenges, explored opportunities, and welcomed growth with an open mind. Your achievements are a testament to your commitment to excellence. Learning is not solely about reaching a destination but about the journey—one enriched with curiosity, passion, and perseverance.

The Role of Educators and Mentors

A heartfelt thank you to the educators and mentors who have guided these learners. Your patience, encouragement, and unwavering support have been instrumental in shaping their success. Chris Solomons, Andrew Wessels, Lisa Mwewa, and Zwelakhe Ntshangase, your dedication to nurturing young minds is deeply valued.

Education: The Key to Transformation

If we are to eradicate global poverty and uplift our nation, investing in youth education is imperative. Learners, as you embark on this new year, push yourselves, work harder than ever, and seek out opportunities for growth. Your potential knows no limits.

The Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation, with the support of the Arab Gulf Programme for Development in Africa, is committed to providing comprehensive digital skills training in coding, robotics, gamification, food security, and wellness. We look forward to welcoming new learners to the KMF Digital Skills Training Centre this year.

The Promise of a Brighter Future

Promise me, you will stay in school. Your education is an investment that no one can take from you. It is the cornerstone of your future success and the key to unlocking your full potential.

To all learners—whether receiving an award today or not—you have the ability to achieve greatness. Dream big, work hard, and remain curious. Your journey has just begun, and the world is watching.

Congratulations to our awardees—you are an inspiration, and you have the power to change South Africa and the world. As Malala Yousafzai once said, “One child, one teacher, one book, and one pen can change the world.”

The change begins now.
