DStv Enriching the Lives of 3,500 School Children Through Their School Bag Initiative

DStv is proud to partner with Safe Study, Timbuktu in the valley and various NGO’s in the Johannesburg city center in an initiative to distribute 3,500
school bags to children in need. These unique bags are made from DStv’s recycled billboard material and a durable waterproof canvas, combining sustainability with community impact.
As part of its ongoing commitment to social and environmental responsibility, DStv has repurposed its PVC billboards, using them as durable linings for the school bags. For the bag making process, DStv contracted with over 30 Micro-business owners based at Eco Smarts Production Hubs in Diepsloot and Bertrams. The businesses are women owned, and this order has provided an average of one month’s work for each business.
The first batch of school bags was distributed in December 2024, in Bertrams, Johannesburg.

The rest of the bags will be distributed in January, just in time for the opening of school and will reach children from various schools nationwide. Each bag features a stitched-in plastic pocket for name tags, adding a personal touch, and a DStv logo, symbolizing the company’s commitment to uplifting communities. DStv’s parent company, the MultiChoice Group, follows an environmental strategy centered on partnerships, resource conservation, eco-friendly innovations, and minimizing environmental impact. The recycled bags are waterproof, durable, and designed for daily use—proof that sustainability and functionality can go hand in hand.
“We are thrilled to recycle our billboards into high-quality, durable school bags for underprivileged children. This initiative reflects DStv’s dedication to sustainability and community upliftment,” says Sthembiso Semenya, PR Manager at DStv.
