China, South Africa Unite to Celebrate International Day for Dialogue Among Civilizations

The Chinese Embassy in Pretoria hosted a commemorative gathering to mark the first-ever United Nations International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations in June 13, a landmark event highlighting the enduring friendship and shared values between China and South Africa,

The international observance, officially recognized by the UN General Assembly in June 2024 following a China-sponsored resolution, sets June 10 as a day to promote cross-cultural understanding, mutual respect, and collaborative solutions to global challenges. Thursday’s event in South Africa’s administrative capital drew around 50 distinguished guests, including government officials, ANC leaders, diplomats, academics, and members of civil society.

Speaking at the event, Chinese Ambassador to South Africa, Wu Peng, emphasized the urgency of unity and dialogue in today’s complex world. “The world is experiencing profound change and uncertainty,” he said. “This day is a call to deepen mutual learning among civilizations and to strengthen solidarity to address global challenges.”

Ambassador Wu highlighted China’s active commitment to intercultural exchange, pointing to tangible initiatives such as the incorporation of Mandarin in South Africa’s education curriculum and the introduction of African language degree programs at Chinese universities. “China firmly believes that diversity is an asset,” he stated.

“As the initiator of this global resolution, we stand ready to work with South Africa and the international community to build a more inclusive, interconnected, and peaceful world.”

Representing South Africa’s leadership, Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, a senior figure in the African National Congress (ANC), applauded the initiative and recalled South Africa’s own journey of reconciliation and peaceful coexistence. “Our struggle against apartheid and our transition to democracy are prime examples of civilizations engaging in meaningful dialogue,” she said. “This initiative by China resonates with our values and reflects our shared commitment to peace and cooperation.”

Busani Ngcaweni, Director-General of the National School of Government, also spoke on the occasion, stressing that dialogue lies at the heart of South Africa and China’s foreign policies. “Both our nations prioritize diplomacy over conflict. Promoting dialogue among civilizations is not just a symbolic gesture — it is a roadmap to silencing the guns and unlocking sustainable development,” he remarked.

The event served as a platform for reinforcing China-Africa solidarity, particularly as the world navigates complex geopolitical shifts and the emergence of a multipolar global order.

Attendees included representatives from the South African Communist Party (SACP), various think tanks, and diplomatic missions, reflecting the diverse support for the global call for peaceful dialogue and mutual respect.

As both countries continue to champion multilateralism, Thursday’s gathering was more than a diplomatic ceremony — it was a reaffirmation of a shared vision rooted in cultural exchange, understanding, and a collective future for humanity.

With the growing importance of China-Africa relations, especially in education, trade, and peace-building, the celebration of the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations signals a renewed commitment to cooperation, unity, and progress across borders.
