BMW IT Hub Celebrates 20 Years of Taking South African Tech Talent to the World

By Thembi Moyo

Pretoria – What began as a specialised support unit in 2006 has grown into one of BMW Group’s most important global technology centres, with the BMW IT Hub South Africa celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

Based in Menlyn, Pretoria, the hub has become the largest BMW IT Hub outside Germany and now employs more than 2,500 technology professionals who support digital operations across more than 130 BMW locations worldwide. From managing production line systems to developing customer-facing digital platforms, South African talent has become a driving force behind BMW’s global digital transformation.

The milestone marks two decades of investment in local skills, innovation and technology development, positioning South Africa as a significant contributor to the global digital economy. Peter van Binsbergen, Chairman and CEO of BMW Group South Africa, said the anniversary highlights the world-class talent available in the country. “This 20-year milestone is a testament to the exceptional talent we have right here in South Africa. The hub has evolved from a support centre into a global innovation powerhouse, and as we continue embracing artificial intelligence and data-driven mobility, our Pretoria team will remain at the heart of BMW Group’s digital future,” he said.

The hub’s growth has also made a notable impact on the local economy. Over the years, more than 2,000 new jobs have been created through expansion, while BMW estimates that the IT Hub will contribute more than R4 billion to South Africa’s economy in 2026. For Thorsten Achenbach, Director of the BMW IT Hub South Africa, the anniversary reflects the success of turning local expertise into global innovation. This milestone reflects our commitment to transforming local potential into global innovation, ensuring South Africa remains a key architect of the BMW Group’s digital journey,” he said.

Beyond technology and business growth, the BMW IT Hub has spent the past two decades investing heavily in skills development and youth empowerment. Coinciding with Youth Month, the company highlighted programmes aimed at addressing South Africa’s digital skills gap. Through mentorship initiatives, career guidance programmes and partnerships with educational institutions, the hub has reached more than 40,000 young people over the years.

The Graduate Tech Academy (GTA), one of the flagship programmes, continues to create opportunities for aspiring technology professionals. In 2026 alone, 134 graduates were enrolled in the programme, gaining practical experience and exposure to careers in technology and digital innovation. BMW has also strengthened its collaboration with leading academic institutions, including the University of Pretoria and the Stellenbosch University. These partnerships provide students with opportunities to work on real-world projects while gaining valuable industry experience.

Building on the success of the inaugural Stellenbosch University Colloquium in 2025, BMW and its academic partners will host a week-long innovation programme in 2026, bringing together top students from universities across South Africa. The initiative aims to equip participants with hands-on experience in emerging technologies while encouraging innovation and research. To commemorate the milestone, BMW Group South Africa hosted a special anniversary event at the Menlyn-based IT Hub. The celebration brought together government representatives, industry leaders, academic partners and members of the media.

Among the guests was Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, whose presence underscored the growing partnership between government and the private sector in advancing digital skills development and innovation. Students from the Graduate Tech Academy also attended the event, including members of the 2026 intake, offering a glimpse into the future generation of South African technology leaders. The programme featured demonstrations of artificial intelligence solutions developed by local teams, guided tours of the state-of-the-art facility and discussions focused on preparing young people for careers in the rapidly evolving digital economy.

As BMW Group accelerates its global digital transformation, the Pretoria-based IT Hub continues to play a crucial role in shaping the company’s future. Twenty years after opening its doors, the facility remains a powerful example of how investing in local talent can create global impact while contributing to South Africa’s growing reputation as a hub for technological innovation.
