MMC Mabaso Urges Youth to Take the Lead in Shaping Their Future
By Thembi Moyo
Young people in South Africa must rise, get involved, and take control of their future this was the clear and compelling message from MMC for Human Settlements, Cllr Mlungisi Mabaso, in a recent interview addressing youth development.
Mabaso expressed concern over high youth unemployment, limited economic opportunities, and a lack of meaningful involvement in decision making structures. “The environment is not friendly for young people,” he said. “We’ve allowed older generations to make decisions for us. That needs to change.”
He encouraged the youth to step up and contest positions of power, saying that true transformation can only happen when young people occupy spaces where important decisions are made. “Don’t sit back and complain. Take charge. Be part of the solution,” he urged.
Mabaso also highlighted on the education system, saying it needs urgent reform to better align with the country’s economic needs. “Education must equip young people with skills that can help grow the economy. Many subjects taught today don’t contribute to job creation.”
He stressed the need for better access to training and development opportunities, saying more awareness is needed around government programmes like the National Skills Fund. “Young people don’t even know these resources exist. Government must improve outreach and bring these services to rural areas and townships.”
In closing, Mabaso urged young people to stay focused, stay away from substance abuse, and participate in community development. “Drugs and alcohol won’t build your future. Get involved in programmes that uplift your life and your community.”
