Mayor extends gratitude to BadBoyz
An off-duty Johannesburg metro policeman was murdered in Hillbrow.
Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said the officer‚ from the recovery unit‚ was on foot when he was shot several times in the upper body.
The incident took place at about 3pm. He was declared dead on the scene. One suspect was arrested in the basement in a building near the crime scene in Claim Street. A second suspect remains at large and the murder weapon remains missing. Minnaar said the officer’s gun was the only thing stolen.
Police spokesperson captain Kay Makhubele thanked BadBoyz Security for identifying where the suspect was hiding, whom they arrested.
Joburg mayor Herman Mashaba said in a statement that two community members had helped track down the suspects after they had fled into a building.
“Badboyz Security assisted police by pointing out the suspects’ hiding place within the building. Unfortunately‚ one of them was injured in the process by unsafe glass within the building.”
Mashaba believes that law enforcement in the city needs to be re-examined.
“Our policing authorities are also hot on the heels of the other suspect who is believed to be in possession of the firearm,” says Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba.
“This tragic and senseless loss comes after the city and our residents were forced to bid farewell to 3 brave firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty.
“This latest attack on our JMPD officers is not only an attack on government but an attack on our efforts to return the rule of law in our city. It is an attack on our residents, who are desperate to feel safe in their homes, communities and streets.
“We will not let unscrupulous criminals hold us to ransom.
“The city is working with law enforcement authorities to ensure that no stone is left unturned in apprehending these criminals.
“I plead with any resident who may have information regarding this attack to please come forward. My heartfelt condolences to go the friends and family of our fallen officer. As we apprehend these criminals‚ justice must be done.”
Johannesburg community safety MEC Michael Sun called the murder “totally unacceptable”.
JMPD chief David Tembe said: “Our target is that if you shoot a law enforcement officer‚ within two hours they must be behind bars.”
