Kabelo Gwamanda relieved of his duties
The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Dada Morero, has officially relieved Cllr Kabelo Gwamanda, the former Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Development, of all his official duties.
“The decision to discharge MMC Gwamanda is effective immediately and aims to ensure that the City’s service delivery remains uninterrupted and continues to meet the needs of its residents,” the office of the Mayor stated.
In light of this change, Cllr Morero has appointed Cllr Tebogo Nkonkou as the new MMC for Community Development, effective immediately.
The Executive Mayor expressed confidence that Cllr Nkonkou will lead the department with the dedication and commitment to further improve the lives of the City’s residents.
The City of Johannesburg remains steadfast and committed to ensuring the continued delivery of quality services to the people through the eyes of residents of Johannesburg.
Gwamanda is a former executive mayor of the City and was the youngest to be appointed to the highest seat. On Tuesday (13 August 2024) Gwamanda
submitted his resignation as the Executive Mayor of the City. According to a statement, this was in line with the political engagements that were influenced by the newly formed Government of National Unity (GNU).
The coalition in the City, led by the African National Congress (ANC) is called the Government of Local Unity (GLU), which took power from the Multi-Party Coalition in January last year and appointed Thapelo Amad as mayor.
What led to the dismissal
The ActionSA Joburg Caucus filed a motion in a recent Council meeting, referring Councillor Kabelo Gwamanda to the Ethics and Disciplinary Committee. This motion comes after Councillor Gwamanda’s removal as MMC for Community Development due to pending fraud charges.
“As the allegations against Councillor Gwamanda predate his councillorship, a Council resolution is necessary for referral or dismissal. ActionSA holds the view that Councillor Gwamanda cannot serve the city with unresolved allegations. We have prima facie evidence that suggests Councillor Gwamanda compromised the city’s integrity and reputation. Thus, we call for Councillor Gwamanda to relinquish his PR Councillor role or for his party to take action and remove him from Council,” said Zark Lebatlang, ActionSA CoJ Caucus Chief Whip in a statement before Gwamanda’s dismissal.
