K9 arrests drug dealers in joburg CBD

The City of Johannebsurg’s K9 Unit has seen yet another win in efforts to combat crime across the City.
The Unit, which is under the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) raided three well known drug hotspots in the Joburg CBD.
The operation was successful in putting five drug dealers behind bars and seized large amounts of illicit drugs.
It seems the City is taking a hardball approach in the inner city, where Mayor Herman Mashaba has earmarked for developments that would turn the area into a construction site.
These are the areas that were targeted for the operation:
1. Corner of Bree and Nugget Streets where two foreign nationals were arrested for being in possession of drugs (nyoape). They also attempted to bribe one of the police officers.
2. Corner of Joubert and Plein Streets where two foreign nationals were arrested for possession of drugs (nyoape).
3. Corner of Goud and Main Streets where one foreign national was arrested for being in possession of drugs (nyoape).
All the suspects have been detained at Johannesburg Central SAPS. MMC for Public Safety, Cllr Michael Sun said: “the City welcomes the arrests of these drug dealers operating in the City’s CBD where usage and dealing of nyaope is a common sight. We are working tirelessly to restore law and order in the inner city in so it becomes a safe and livable African metropolis. Executive Mayor, Cllr Herman Mashaba is committed to cleaning up the inner city and as part of that commitment, we will ensure that we rid the inner city of drugs and crime”.
While law enforcement is doing their best to combat crime, residents have been encouraged to take ownership of their communities by reporting any suspicious activities to the police. “Our JMPD K9 is making head way in eliminating drug dealing, we must also ensure that the South African Police Services (SAPS) and National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) do their part in keeping these criminals behind bars.”
