Honeydew Ridge resident Michael Clifton received the ultimate early birthday gift when he won R100,000 in Pick n Pay’s Smart Shopper Price Palooza last week.
Clifton, who turns 51 on February 28, has been a dedicated shopper at Pick n Pay Honey Junction, preferring to shop in-store to personally assess product quality. His big win came as a complete surprise while inquiring about the price of Pick n Pay’s No-Name Brand toilet paper.
“I was shocked when they swiped my card and told me I had won. It still doesn’t feel real—I think it will only sink in when the money clears in my account,” said Clifton.
Although he has won money before, this is by far his biggest prize.

Married with two children, aged eight and twelve, Clifton and his wife are using the unexpected windfall wisely.
“We haven’t told our kids yet, but we’re planning to pay off our credit cards. I’ll definitely spoil my wife too—maybe with a nice dinner. This win gives us breathing room and helps us get back on solid ground.”
