Flash floods rock parts of Gauteng
On Friday afternoon, January 5, a big storm hit the Gauteng region causing floods across several parts including Ekurhuleni and Joburg.
In the Inner-City, vehicles were stuck on the roads with some being swept away by the flash floods. The heavy downpour lasted for less than an hour but has caused several damages to infrastructure and multiple properties.
In a statement, the City of Johannesburg say that emergency service alongside other critical stakeholders, responding to four ‘near-miss incidents’ that involved four vehicles in low-lying bridges. Parts of the roads in the Inner-City were flooded leaving cars submerged in water.
The City has also reported mass floods in Alexandra township, where in the informal settlements of Stjwetla located near the Juskei river, have been affected.
Other areas affected by the heavy rain include Bedfordview, N3 Freeway, Edenvale, Kesington and Jeppe to name a few.
Joburg Emergency Services confirm that the rains have resulted in no casualties. The personnel will remain on high alert to respond to any incidents around the city as the wet weather is forecast to persist.
