Experience the Vibrancy of Chinese New Year in Johannesburg’s Chinatown
Johannesburg’s inner-city residents are in for a spectacular cultural experience as Chinatown in Cyrildene comes alive with the Chinese New Year Celebration on February 8, 2025.
The event, hosted by the Chinatown Johannesburg Community Committee, promises a vibrant mix of traditional Chinese performances, cuisine, and fireworks, offering locals a chance to immerse themselves in Chinese culture right in the heart of the city.
The festivities will take place from 16:30 to 21:30 on Derrick Avenue, the historic center of Johannesburg’s Chinatown.
Attendees will be treated to a visual and sensory feast, with the event lineup featuring lion and dragon dances, a parade of Chinese national costumes, cultural performances, Chinese cuisine and wine, and a spectacular fireworks display.
The lion and dragon dances, accompanied by rhythmic drumbeats and clashing cymbals, are believed to bring good luck and drive away bad spirits.

The parade will showcase China’s diverse ethnic attire, while martial arts demonstrations, traditional music, and dance performances will entertain the crowds. Food lovers can indulge in authentic Chinese dishes, from dumplings and Peking duck to rice cakes and sweet treats, paired with fine Chinese wines.
The evening will conclude with a dazzling fireworks display, symbolizing the welcoming of the new year with prosperity and joy.
The Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, marks the beginning of the Lunar New Year and is one of the most important celebrations in Chinese culture. Each year is associated with a Chinese zodiac sign, and 2025 will usher in the Year of the Snake, symbolizing wisdom, intuition, and transformation. The festival is a time for family reunions, feasting, and honoring ancestors, and Chinatown’s event will reflect these cherished traditions.
For Johannesburg’s diverse inner-city community, this event presents a unique opportunity to explore Chinese heritage, enjoy an evening of entertainment, and engage with the local Chinese community.
Whether you’re a foodie eager to try new flavors, a culture enthusiast, or simply looking for a fun family outing, this festival offers something for everyone.
