South Africans Encouraged to Support Gender Equality in Farming
Fairtrade Africa is urging South Africans to take a stand for gender equality in agriculture during the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children. Through their “Be Fair Right Now” campaign, they aim to raise awareness about the challenges women face in farming and encourage ethical consumer choices to create a fairer agricultural system.
Women play a vital role in agriculture, contributing 60% of the global agricultural workforce and producing half of the world’s food. Despite their contributions, many face obstacles like limited land ownership, restricted access to funding, and social discrimination.
“Women in farming bring crucial expertise, from managing resources to adapting to climate challenges,” said Sandra Ndlovu, Regional Communications Officer for Southern Africa at Fairtrade Africa. “But they often work longer hours than men and face more significant barriers. Fairness isn’t just about wages—it’s about empowering the women who sustain our food systems, communities, and climate solutions. By supporting them, we pave the way for a truly sustainable future.”
The “Be Fair Right Now” initiative runs from November 25 to December 10, 2024, alongside the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. It highlights how systemic challenges for women in farming affect not only their progress but also the growth of communities and the world.
