Four IIE MSA students turned up the heat in the kitchen to claim top honours in the recent IIE MSA Residence Cooking Competition, held at the Capsicum Culinary Studio on the Ruimsig campus.
The winning team comprised Kudakwashe Ndawana, a first-year Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences student, along with second-year Bachelor of Commerce in Law students Lethabo Mokoena and Omogolo Mashinyana, and Lucia Mangena, a second-year Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering student.
The competition aimed to encourage students to sharpen their culinary skills while offering a creative, interactive experience outside the lecture room. Contestants prepared a variety of savoury dishes, showcasing flavour, originality and presentation.
For the winners, the challenge involved preparing shrimp pasta with an inventive twist. “I loved experimenting with ingredients and plating our pasta,” said Mashinyana. “Seeing my team’s ideas merge into an amazing dish was fulfilling.”
Each team was judged on originality, taste and presentation, with the winning students walking away with cash prizes and food vouchers from Capsicum Culinary School.
IIE MSA, an educational brand of The Independent Institute of Education (The IIE), said the event not only celebrated creativity but also highlighted the value of holistic student development beyond the classroom.
