MMC Health and Social hosts a Substance and Drug Abuse Campaign

The City of Joburg MMC for Health and Social Development Cllr Ennie Makhafola hosted a substance and drug abuse campaign to create awareness and educate young people on the perils of taking drugs. The event took place at Rosebank College in Braamfontein.

The event also promoted the importance of a healthy lifestyle, mental health awareness and provided information on where addict can get drug and alcohol counselling support. “Young people need to say no to drug and alcohol abuse and resist peer pressure. Substance abuse has the potential to derail one’s life,” said Cllr Makhafola.

The abuse of drugs such as marijuana, methamphetamines, and opioids has increased in recent years, leading to a rise in crime, poverty, and health issues. One of the main effects of drug abuse in South Africa is an increase in crime. Many individuals who are addicted to drugs resort to criminal activities to finance their addiction. This can lead to an increase in theft, burglary, and even violent crime in communities where drug abuse is prevalent.

Drug abuse has a significant impact on the health of individuals and communities. Drug addiction can lead to physical and mental health problems, including heart disease, liver damage, and depression.

At the event young people had the opportunity to test for HIV/AIDS, diabetes and blood pressure level .
