Toy gunmen rob CBD shop
Johannesburg – Six men were arrested after they allegedly robbed a U-Save Shoprite in the CBD on Wednesday, according to police.
Police spokesperson Captain Xoli Mbele said cashiers saw a suspect pushing their security guard inside the shop at gunpoint. “He was joined by other suspects who ordered them to lie down. Two of the suspects had firearms and one stood guard at the door. They forced the cashiers to open the tills where they took an undisclosed amount of money, wallets and cellphones from customers before they fled the scene. Police officers on foot patrols saw the men running away and they followed them. The suspects jumped into a Toyota Hi-Ace taxi. They were ordered to get out, and police recovered stolen money, wallets and cellphones.”
Mbele added that upon closer inspection the officers realised that the firearms used in the crime were toy guns. “The men face charges of business robbery and possession of dangerous weapons,” he added.
