R15m raised in last years Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge

The annual Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge showcased pure heart as 24 000 riders took to the streets to tackle the 95km route which has been ‘flipped’ for the first time.
The roads were filled with riders and some of them decided to kick it up a notch by dressing in colourful kits, and costumes that showcased causes they were passionate about.
With 130 charities registered at this year’s cycling event, the theme was about riding for a purpose. In last years race, an astonishing R15 million was raised for charity as people went out of their way to ride for a cause they believed in.
Calrla Oberholzer was the winner of the ladies category and she says that the event was a blank canvas for everyone.
Anriette Schoeman, who finished second and won the Cycle Challenge 10 years ago, said the route was hard, but interesting.
The women’s race ended in a sprint finish with Jo Van De Winkel placing third and Theresa Ralph placing fourth.
In the men’s race, Team BCX shined bright like a diamond and took home the title of 1st, 2nd and 4th.
Brandon Downes won the race with teammate Steven van Heerden following in second place.
Dylan Girdlestone from team Office Guru was third and BCX’s Nolan Hoffman raced to fourth.
While the winners crossed the finish line, many riders were cheered on by spectators who fuelled the cycle challenge with charism and support.
Robyn de Groot and Wessel Botha showed imperious form to blow away their rivals and win the Telkom 947 Mountain Bike Challenge at the Riversands complex.
For De Groot, the victory was an emotional return to the city of her birth.
The men’s 25km event was again a tightly contested affair, with Jaedon Terlouw pipping Kyle Swanepoel in a sprint finish, both finishing in 50:09. Jarrod Havenga was third, just eight seconds behind them. Jane van Eeden won the women’s 25km class in 56:34, with Natasha Roets (59:03) second and Natalie Long (1:00;03).
