Operation Shanela sweeps through Inner-City streets

Gauteng Police Commissioner Leiutenant General Elias Mawela led the provincial high-density Operation Shanela on Thursday, 5 October 2023.

The Provincial Commissioner and his top management and officials from other law enforcement agencies such as Home Affairs, Gauteng Traffic Police, Joburg Metro Police, Community Safety officials, CPF and private security companies.

The operation which seeks to stamp the authority of the State, started a day earlier with the first phase through Tracing Operations by the detectives in the province which resulted in the arrest of 1047 suspects for offenses that include murder, attempted murder, assault with Grevious Bodily Harm (GBH), common assault, rape and armed robbery of which 207 are for crimes committed against women and children.

The operation included a roadblock in the Maboneng precinct where police were monitoring motorists compliance, searching for illegal contraband, drugs, unlicensed firearms, drunk drivers, stolen vehicles and ensuring the safety of road users.

Operation Shanela ended with the Provincial Commissioner leading the disposing of liquor that was seized from July 2023 to date. Mawela was joined by Senior managers from SAPS Gauteng, other law enforcement agencies, the local Councillor, Liquor Traders Association and Provincial Liquor Board.
More than 1,4 million litres of liquor were destroyed.
